I finally decided to get a MicroKorg. I really don't know what it is about this synth that makes it so special to me. I used to want one years ago, but never got one because I always felt like there were 'better' synths. For one thing, it's not actually analog. It's just virtual analog, and it's built on pretty old VA technology so there are newer synths that do a much better job at that. It also only has 4 note polyphony, so you can't really play complex chords with it. The keys are small and spongey feeling. Really difficult to edit sounds. It's mostly made out of plastic, so no premium metal feel. It has a vocoder, but it's not all that great and the microphone it comes with is pretty cheap. I could go on, but on top of all that, it still goes for more than $500 new if you can find one, and the MicroKorg-S (which I got) is like $700 new.

Over the years, I picked up a lot of synths that are so much better than it. Real analog, more polophony, metal build, knob-per-funcion, so on and so forth. But I don't know what it is that kept drawing me back to this synth. It's probably just this nostalgia for a time when I wanted it and couldn't afford it. Or maybe I just got hit with another wave of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome), and this was my outlet. But I just feel like there's something about the aura of it that's inspiring. And I know this will sound crazy, but the inspiration I get from it might not even come from playing it. I probably will actually end up using sounds from one of my analog synths like the Sequential Take 5, or the Korg Minilogue, or a sofware synth like Omnisphere, but just having the MicroKorg in the studio is gonna have some kinda influence on the songs I make. At least that's what I think.

So yeah, I've been playing around with it and it's just fun. I don't think there always needs to be a practical reason to buy things. And yeah, I know that's terrible advice financially. It's really irresponsible to spend money on things with low or no discernable return on investment. But I don't care. I don't know anything. I'm just living life. And now I'm living it with a MicroKorg and I think that's cool.

So yeah, this isn't some review of it or me telling you why you should get one. I'm gonna be honest, you probably should NOT get one. Especially in today's time. There are free mobile apps that can do what this thing can do sound-wise and probably better. To be honest, there's really no point in getting any music hardware at all anymore except for maybe microphones. The average listener can't tell the difference between hardware and software. Honestly, I think even seasoned listeners can be fooled, or might even say that the software sounds better. So yeah, save your money. But sometimes I like to just do stuff.
